![]() I have an organizer packed with electrical supplies, another with metric bolts in different sizes and lengths, another with metric cap screws, SAE… etc. I might bring a specific organizer with me containing fasteners or supplies for a specific job, but almost never more than one. With organizers, I don’t usually need to be so mobile. I think that creates a natural limit on how much use I’ll get from modular tool box systems and how many I’ll buy. Nothing really stays in the boxes permanently. Since I don’t turn wrenches for a living anymore though, my Toughsystem boxes are mostly used to temporarily take tools from my shop to elsewhere on my farm for a specific job… or camping ( I really like being able to throw some supplies in my rolling xl box and load a couple Toughsystem coolers on top). It’s too big of an advantage to be able to piece components together in the format that makes the most sense. I wouldn’t buy a “toolbox” that wasn’t part of a modular system. This has led me to wonder about how everyone still feels about standalone tool box, and standalone or connectable organizers. Still, the boost in features, functionality, and expandability are often worth it.Ī lot of questions and purchasing decisions today focus on Packout vs. Modular organizers and tool boxes often have some compromises, in other to still provide for system-wide stacking, latching, and accessory compatibility. I find modular tool storage systems appealing, as they do away with the notion of one size or style to fit all.īut, I also still buy individual solutions, as well as modular tool boxes and organizers with non-connected use and mobility in mind. Modular tool storage combos seem like a novel and modern idea.īut, the idea of a multi-component mobile tool box storage system isn’t either new. It’s interesting to see how the mobile and workshop storage industry has changed over the years. ![]() I’m focusing on Milwaukee, but there are many other brands and options. Or would you go straight for a modular tool box system? ![]() Would you still buy a standalone plastic tool box today? What if you need two? Four? What about tool boxes? This is a more straightforward question, as I can’t think of any hand tool boxes outside of modular storage systems that connect to each other. Would you go with an organizer system, or organizers that connect to tool boxes, tool bags, and other such storage components? So the question there isn’t quite the same as with tool boxes. A 56" or 72" US General would be my personal pick.Dewalt’s non-ToughSystem connectable organizers aren’t standalone either, as they’re part of a line of compatible organizers. Just not impressed by the Milwaukee boxes! If it suites your needs and you like it, go for it. I have a total of eleven full width, and extra wide drawers across three boxes in my home garage, and still find myself wishing I had more!īTW, now that I see the actual size of that box, those drawers may be wide enough, but I still wouldn't want that box for myself. Once you have a box with at least one full width drawer, it would be really difficult to go back to having none. Plus, it sucks when you have to place a long tool cross ways, corner to corner, in order to fit it in the drawer! And as already mentioned, some want all of their sockets in one wide drawer layout, or all of their wrenches in one drawer. Anything that I have that doesn't fit in a standard 26" type box drawer, goes in my full width drawers. I even use one of mine for long Dura Block sanding blocks. These fit my needs fine and are of good enough quality for me not working out of them for a living.Ĭlick to expand.I find full width drawers (or at least extra wide drawers) to be great for long items such as breaker bars, extra long socket extensions, extra long screw drivers, torque wrenches, pry bars, etc. For my home setup I’ve got an original US General cab and chest, a Husky Heavy Duty cab and chest and Husky Heavy Duty cab. **I reread some of my comments and I don’t want you to think I’m trying to tell you it’s “tool truck box or bust”. A nicety really, but something that is difficult to ever go away from once you’ve gotten used to. Full length drawer is definitely a personal preference, but makes large sockets drawers so much easier to manage and have all in one place, or air tools, etc. ![]() Click to expand.I welcome someone more knowledgeable on the tool truck brands to correct me, as I’m not 100% here, but I believe depending on the model and series you’re looking at they range from 14-18ga.Ī big difference with the Snap-On and Mac boxes is going to be the depth of the drawers, the quality of the slides and the casters as well as the overall drawer layout a lot of the time just seems to be better laid out.
